The Life of the Buddha

The Buddha’s life is at the heart of the Buddhist tradition.
This seminar will explore the Buddha’s life and teachings using the earliest texts and consider traditional accounts the light of recent scholarly understandings. Going beyond the well known stories and quotations, it will explore the Buddha’s impact on individuals and his society and include a meditative and devotional element, as well as talks and discussion.
Topics will include:
- Knowing the Buddha: how much can we know for sure about the Buddhas life?
- A world in ferment: the Buddha’s India
- The forest path: the legends of the Buddha’s spiritual journey
- The Teacher: the Buddha’s impact on others
- Living with the gods: the supernatural and shamanic dimension of the Buddha’s life
- Changing the world: how the Buddha changed his society
