Wagner and the “Meistersinger”

Wednesday, 7 July (6pm) to Sunday, 11 July (after lunch)

With Taradasa and Dhammaloka

We’ve booked 15 tickets for a high class performance of Wagner’s “Meistersinger” on July 10, 2010 in Birmingham. The performance will be by the Welsh National Opera. It will be directed by Richard Jones, conducted by Lothar Koenigs, and the central role of Hans Sachs – the most loveable man in opera? – is to be played by Bryn Terfel, no less!

In the seminar we’ll look at this opera in the larger context of Wagner’s work and development … with ‘Tristan and Isolde’ written during the same period; the problems he encountered in creating the ‘Ring’, and his particular conception of the ‘total work of Art’ and its spiritual dimensions.

In the ’Meistersinger’, several profound issues emerge – one, for example, the tension between respect for tradition and experience, and the importance of innovation and creativity is an issue that ring bells not so far from home! Its music ranges from the joyous overture, through the riot in Act 2, two profound monologues, to the ravishing quintet, and ends in a celebration of all that is highest in art. It is a many-layered and monumental piece and in many ways provides an ideal introduction to Wagner’s moving and extravagant art.

Suggested donation: £110 + £35 for the ticket. Accommodation: £15/10 per night.

Please book early. Our teachers put a lot of preparation into the seminars — sometimes several weeks of work. We would find it irresponsible to let them do all that and then cancel the even at short notice due to lack of participants.

If you consider attending, but aren’t as yet certain, please let us know. By booking early, you can help us prevent disappointment on all sides.
